My condo is located at the edge of Calgary’s Victoria Park neighbourhood. This neighbourhood has completed changed over the past several decades.
- At one time, Victoria Park was nothing but houses. This image shows a street scene from 1920, and the same view almost a hundred years later.
- In 1956, the area had a grid layout of streets that persist (mostly) today. The arrow points to the location of my condo today.
- Historic Enoch House sits next to a busy city street, and is one of the few remaining homes. Despite its appearance, it is actually in decent condition inside. Various plans are being proposed to move the house to a neighbouring lot and preserve it as part of a park or restaurant.
- Victoria Park presents an interesting contrast of density – sprawling parking lots and very tall condo buildings. At one time, houses were everywhere, but most of that has been cleared away. Enoch House is visible in the centre.
- Many of the city’s tallest condos are in the Victoria Park area, with more going up all the time. Looking up here, your view is dominated by the concrete shell of a future condo, cranes, and a lone street light.
- The age group targeted by the services of this building has changed over the years.
- Construction of the new National Music Centre in the distance will be complete in 2016.
- Many empty lots act as temporary park spaces.
- This is one of the streets still intact with houses in Victoria Park, on one side anyway (behind me is a parking lot). The days for these homes may be numbered, but it’s a unique view into what the entire community may have looked like in years past.
- There isn’t much on this street currently, but that will likely change someday.
- Locks and chains always seem to look good, especially in front of the snow.
- It appears this resident has had issues with parking in the past.
