17th Avenue in Calgary is one of the city’s most active spots for socializing and night life. It was recently referred to as the Red Mile during the Flames Stanley Cup playoffs.
Earlier this year, I walked the avenue at night, and captured many great photos. Here are my favourites!
- I seem to have a lot of photos of these posters, but they are indeed one of my favourite photographic features of the avenue.
- The sidewalks are especially lively in summer, with patios and many people out walking.
- Analog Coffee has only been open for a few years, but it’s become one of the most popular coffee destinations in the city.
- Cycling to and from 17th is especially common in the summer.
- The retail options of 17th historically didn’t include any “box stores”, but Best Buy has since opened up on the 2nd floor on this corner lot. A Canadian Tire is on the way nearby.
- A longtime Moxies restaurant location has closed, but a new restaurant has since opened.
- The store selection along 17th is always changing. I notice a business opening or closing at least once a month.
- 17th is a mix of retail, bars, and office space. The bars aren’t clustered too close together, likely for safety reasons.
- Taxis are a familiar sight on all of the busy streets at night.
- Hundreds of posters for local events accumulate on designated posts.
- This pizza place is actually closed now, but it stood out well at night, appearance-wise, when it was open.
