On this Remembrance Day, I thought it would be appropriate to make a post about the neighbourhood of Garrison Green in Calgary where I used to live. This area was once part of Canadian Forces Base Calgary, before the base was closed in 1998.
- I lived in the Gateway Garrison Green condo, which was constructed less than 10 years ago. Many homes in the area originally served the military base.
- Just 1 block away is Peacekeepers Park, constructed in 2004 to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives.
- The first Wall of Honour was meant to have enough space for 60 years worth of names. Canadian fatalities in Afghanistan, however, required the installation of a second wall.
- The park also features a Mission Wall which lists all the United Nations missions that Canadians have been involved in.
- From inside the courtyard known as Peacekeeper’s Court at the Gateway Garrison Green, Peacekeepers Park can be seen in the distance.
- The streets of Garrison Green were originally named after places where Canadian troops had served on peacekeeper missions. Following the CFB base closure, it was decided to rename the streets in honour of actual Canadian peacekeepers – 13 in total. Plaques can found at the street corners to identify who these people were. Today, the neighbourhood is well kept and maintained by its residents.
- This was my view for nearly 3 years! I now live near downtown Calgary, but it was great to have lived in a neighbourhood that recognizes Canada’s proud history of peacekeeping.
